Three young activists - Ievhenii Bozhevskyi from Dnipro, Valentyna Rotari from Balti in Moldova, and Mariana Korolchuk from Ivano-Frankivsk first met at YEP Summer StartUp Camp 2018, the international entrepreneurship camp.
“The international entrepreneurship camp was held in Kyiv in July, 11-15. After several days the young people worked out a unique project called Silince,” writes firtka.if.ua.
The main idea is to create a cafe in which all member of the staff are people with hearing problems. The location is designed for customers with no hearing problems as well.
Such spaces are planned to be opened within public dining facilities in the cities of project founders’ residence. The main feature is an introduction of the interactive menu. It will contain menu positions in writing together with images-hints reflecting them in sign language. With the help of these images it will be possible to make order and communicate with a waiter.
The project Silence received many positive reviews at Summer StarUp Camp 2018 from both participants and members of jury. The approach which the students apply to solving such a difficult social issue was highly appreciated with a special award from the international company Lucky Labs.
"We paid special attention to Silence startup back at the winners ceremony at Summer StartUp Camp 2018. This project distinguished itself from the others with important social component as well as with rather original presentation. Its creators know at first hand an inclusivity problem and they managed to produce a useful initiative which is aimed at both solving business objectives and broadening social orientation,” the press service of Lucky Labs comments.
According to Valentyna Rotari, a founder of the project, people with bad hearing are extremely sensitive and easily hurt.
“They have open hearts and strive to be useful for the world but unfortunately things that are common for us become almost impossible for them. Unfortunately people with hearing problems generally keep in touch only with people who know sign language. Live communication with the outside world where words and intonations prevail is limited to visiting a doctor and shopping. Sometimes even these actions are impossible without sign language interpreter’s assistance or use of mobile app. That is why it is interaction that is necessary for these people. They need the feeling of involvement and participation in life of a society.”
The girl found it out not from books since both her parents have bad hearing.
The founders state that this startup is designed to fulfill an important social function. It will allow people with bad hearing to get job and socialize.
It is planned to create a community in which the hearing-impaired and customers that hear and speak without any impairments get an opportunity to communicate, study or drink coffee in silence. Profit of the project will be partly directed in purchase of aid hearing kits.
